Va is a former construction worker from Kandal province, Cambodia. He is 64 years old and married with two daughters, three sons, and five grandchildren. His youngest son still lives at home and works for the same construction company that Va worked for before his retirement. Their other children live nearby, and visit often with the grandchildren. At home, Va enjoys caring for the garden, spending time with family, and watching boxing. Around two years ago, Va developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Va learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On May 28th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure. Va shared, "I hope after surgery, I can see clearly again. Once my eye is better, I want to open a bicycle repair shop in front of my house so I can earn more money to support my family."

Liam is a 3-year-old boy from Kenya. Born to a single mother, he and his older sister live with their aunt as their mother temporarily relocated to Dubai in search of better opportunities. Their aunt, who is also a single mother, has two children of her own. She cares for the children and supports the family through beadwork. On April 12th, Liam was playing indoors when he accidentally fell out of a chair and injured his left elbow. He was promptly taken to the nearby hospital, where an X-ray revealed a closed fracture dislocation of his left hand. The doctors at the hospital recommended surgery for the fracture, but due to financial constraints, Liam's family decided to seek assistance from our medical partners at Nazareth Hospital. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On April 18th, Liam will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. The treatment will alleviate pain and restore his hand's function. Furthermore, as he is still growing, it will reduce the risk of the fracture healing with deformity, which could further impair his hand function long-term. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1.049 to fund this procedure. Liam's Aunt said, “I am so desperate and don’t know what to do with him anymore. I hope he can get help so that at least his hand can be well again, as we plan to take him to school soon.”

Meet Chawezi, a 13-year-old boy from Malawi whose name means "a gift" in the Tumbuka language. He is the oldest in his family and has one younger sibling. Chawezi is a hardworking and bright student in Form 3 at a boarding school. His mother works as a saleswoman, and his father is currently out of work, which led his family to seek financial support for Chawezi's medical care. In his free time, Chawezi enjoys reading and eating chips and chicken. Over three years ago, Chawezi was diagnosed with a right inguinal hernia. He has been to the hospital several times over the years, but unfortunately, he has not been able to receive much help. Currently, the hernia causes him pain, making him unable to concentrate on his studies. Fortunately, our medical partner can help Chawezi receive the treatment he needs to heal. On June 5th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery that will allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Chawezi's family is able to contribute $40.43 towards the cost of his treatment and needs help raising $575 more to fund this procedure. Chawezi said, "I want to get better and go back to school in good condition because I don't want to die."
