Va is a former construction worker from Kandal province, Cambodia. He is 64 years old and married with two daughters, three sons, and five grandchildren. His youngest son still lives at home and works for the same construction company that Va worked for before his retirement. Their other children live nearby, and visit often with the grandchildren. At home, Va enjoys caring for the garden, spending time with family, and watching boxing.
Around two years ago, Va developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own.
When Va learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On May 28th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Va shared, “I hope after surgery, I can see clearly again. Once my eye is better, I want to open a bicycle repair shop in front of my house so I can earn more money to support my family.”
