Redwal received life-saving brain surgery.

Doctors performed a shunt revision to drain the excess fluid from Redwal’s head. Consequently, pressure in his brain will decrease, and his head will cease from growing in size.

Since surgery, Redwal has stopped vomiting, and he is less irritable. This procedure should greatly improve his quality of life.

“Thank you Watsi, you have truly made a difference here,” says Redwal’s mother. “For the longest time, I have been suffering and in great anguish as I listened to his heartbreaking cries due to pain from the pressure in his head. Whew! What a difference it has been having him treated. I’m so thankful for the good you do not only for me but for many other people.”

Three-month-old Redwal is the last-born in a family of two children. He lives with his elder sister, mother, and grandparents in a two room rental house in Nairobi, Kenya.

Redwal was born with a mass swelling on his back called spina bifida. It was operated on when Redwal turned two months. However, over the last month or so, Redwal has had multiple recurrences of his condition: his head has increased abnormally in size. Redwal was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain.

If Redwal’s condition remains untreated, his condition may cause brain damage.

Unfortunately, for his mother, it is hard to raise the funds required. Redwal, his sister, and mother solely depend on his grandmother who sells vegetables in an open air market to sustain the needs of the family. Having exhausted the finances they had to fund for the previous surgeries, they are not able to pay the funds required now for the surgery Redwal needs.

Redwal’s mother shares with us: “It is so draining to be in and out of the hospital, but seeing how much my son is in pain gives me strength to go on.” Let’s support this family and help Redwal to begin his life healthy and happy.
