Meet Ya, a 63-year-old woman from Cambodia who has five children and ten grandchildren. She enjoys visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray.
Three years ago, Ya developed a pterygium in each eye. This growth of fleshy tissue over the thin, clear layer of Ya’s eyes causes her blurred vision and tearing. It is a common condition caused by UV damage, and often occurs in rural farmers who work long hours outdoors without sun protection.
Now, Ya cannot see things very clearly, do work well, or go anywhere outside on her own. She traveled one hour with her husband to reach Watsi’s medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre (“CSC”) for treatment, where doctors will perform a pterygium excision surgery in each eye to remove the growth.
After this short procedure, Ya will be able to see clearly again and be relieved of pain and tearing.

Ya successfully received sight-restoring surgery.
Ya’s eye cataract was successfully removed from her left eye and clear vision has been restored. Following the operation, she was given eye drops to reduce inflammation and fight infection. Ya went home after the first surgery and has yet to return to have the same operation completed in the other eye. Because returning to the clinic requires taking a day off from work and usually a family escort, she may have had trouble finding a day to come back. Also, because she left with clear vision in one eye, her problems with blurred vision are less of a burden making the second surgery a less immediate priority than the first. The second surgery will be free whenever Ya returns.
“I look better and feel comfortable,” says Ya. “I can do work easily and go anywhere outside by myself.”
