Scovia is a 45-year-old small-scale farmer from Uganda. She was born into a humble family of small-scale farmers and is the eighth of nine children, four brothers and four sisters, all of whom now have families and are also farmers. Growing up in a large family with limited income, she was unable to continue her education beyond Primary 7. After dropping out of school, she remained at home helping with farming until she got married at the age of 18. She is now a mother of five children, all of whom are in school, the eldest in Primary 7 and the youngest in Baby Class. To provide for their family, she and her husband cultivate a small piece of land where they mainly grow food crops for home consumption and sell the surplus to earn some income.
For six months, Scovia has been experiencing lower abdominal pain along with other uncomfortable symptoms. She has sought medical help from several nearby health centers, where she was screened and provided medication, providing her with temporary relief. However, the pain later returned, becoming more severe. Further examination and a pelvic scan were done. She has been diagnosed with multiple uterine myomas (fibroids). She needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $219 to fund Scovia’s surgery. On October 16th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at Karoli Lwanga Nyakibale Hospital. Once recovered, Scovia will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain.
Scovia says, “The only hope I have for the success of my surgery lies in your support. Please help me.”
