Jane is a two-year-old girl from Kenya. She is the youngest of four children in her family. While her three older siblings attend school, Jane has not started yet. Her parents support the family through small-scale businesses, selling groceries and secondhand clothes in their local community.
Jane has lived with an umbilical hernia since birth. Her mother first noticed that Jane’s belly button was slightly enlarged and hoped the swelling would resolve on its own. However, over time, the swelling continued to grow rather than disappear.
About a year ago, Jane was taken to their nearby hospital, where an ultrasound was performed. Doctors explained that surgery was necessary, but the facility could not provide the treatment. Jane was later brought to our medical partner’s care center, Nazareth Hospital, where a surgeon confirmed that her condition requires surgery. If left untreated, the hernia could cause pain, feeding difficulties, and further complications.
On February 2nd, Jane will undergo a hernia repair surgery. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $517 to fund this procedure. With treatment, Jane’s family hopes she will be able to grow and live more comfortably.
“I waited with my baby, hoping she would be okay, but now I see things are getting bad,” said Jane’s mother. “I seek help so that she can be treated and be able to grow up like other children.”
