Meet Phally, a 60-year-old woman and crop farmer from Cambodia. “Phally is married without children. Phally enjoys watching Indian dramas on TV,” shares our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
Three years ago, Phally developed mature cataracts in each eye. A cataract occurs when a thin, cloudy layer forms over the eye’s lens. “This causes her blurred vision, discharge, tearing, and fear of bright lights. It is hard for her to see clearly, do work, or go anywhere outside,” CSC explains.
After learning about CSC, Phally and her sister travelled two hours to visit their clinic. They learned that a simple surgical procedure may restore Phally’s sight.
With $225, Phally will undergo cataract surgery, during which her old lenses will be removed and replaced with sheer artificial implants, allowing her to see again immediately after her operation.

Phally received vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Phally had the cataract in her right eye removed in a short surgery, during which her clouded lens was taken out and replaced with a clear, artificial implant. The procedure went very well, and she is already seeing everything clearer than before. Phally is very happy to have her vision restored and she looks forward to returning to her work on her farm.
Though she was scheduled to have cataracts removed from both eyes, she has yet to return to receive the second surgery.
It can often take patients some time to return for follow up care due to a number of reasons. Patients frequently live far away or have important family matters arise that keep them from coming back to the clinic. When Phally can return, the surgery to remove the cataract in her left eye will be free.
