Santurina is a 45-year-old woman from Uganda. With her calm and peaceful demeanor, Santurina is right at home in the mist-covered, rolling hills of her quiet village. She and her husband work side by side as small-scale farmers. During the moments when she is not tilling the soil, you will find Santurina weaving intricate mats, turning dried local fibers into beautiful, functional art.
For the last five years, Santurina has been experiencing severe lower abdominal pain and other worrisome symptoms. She sought help at small community centers, but health resources can be scarce in rural Uganda, and the clinics lacked the diagnostic tools needed to find the root cause of her condition. Santrinah continued to farm while enduring worsening pain each month. Over time, she and her husband were able to pool their money and travel to our medical partner’s hospital, where the medical team was able to finally give them a diagnosis for what she has been experiencing: multiple uterine fibroids. The tumors had grown large and numerous, and her doctors informed Santrinah that she needed a total abdominal hysterectomy. If left untreated, Santrinah will not only continue to experience debilitating pain, but there is a possibility of the tissue transforming into a life-threatening malignancy.
Santrinah will undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy on October 2nd. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $319 to fund Santurina’s surgery. Once recovered, she will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain.
As Santrinah has been processing the news of her diagnosis and surgery, she has been holding to the hope of a complete physical recovery where she can live, farm, and weave mats without pain. She shared: “What I need most is to heal and live a comfortable life without pain. I do not even have words to say.”
