Annah is a two-year-old girl from Uganda, the youngest child in a family of five children. She is dearly loved by her parents and siblings, who have always hoped to see her grow into a healthy and happy child. Both of her parents work hard as small-scale farmers, growing crops mainly for family consumption and selling a small surplus to meet basic household needs. Her four older siblings are all school-going.
Annah’s parents shared that since she was born, she has had health struggles, and always appeared weaker than other children her age. She frequently complains of lower abdominal pain, and her condition has been a constant source of worry for the family. Despite their limited resources, her parents have done everything they can to help her, often purchasing pain medication to ease her discomfort.
Unfortunately, Annah’s condition has worsened over time. The pain has become more frequent and persistent, affecting her ability to enjoy a regular childhood. Unlike other children her age, she is often unable to play freely with friends, run around at home, or participate in activities that bring joy to young children. Her parents have watched worriedly as their daughter continues to struggle with discomfort and reduced activity.
Recently, Annah developed a swelling around her umbilical region, causing even greater concern for her family. Determined to find a solution, her parents brought her to Rwibaale Hospital, where she was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia, a tissue bulge in the belly button area, that occurs due to a weak spot in the abdominal wall. While her parents are grateful that treatment is available, they are facing a major challenge. As small-scale farmers with limited and unpredictable income, they are unable to meet the costs associated with the surgery and hospital care. The family’s resources are already stretched by the responsibility of caring for five children and supporting their education and daily needs.
Fortunately, on September 1st, Annah will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center. Once completed, the procedure will alleviate her pain, allowing her to grow, play, and thrive like other children her age. Now, Annah’s family needs help to fund this $234 procedure.
Annah’s father says, “I hope that my daughter will get relief from the pain, and also be able to engage in play with others after recovery.”
