Malis is a 20-year-old factory worker in need of ear surgery. She lives in Prey Veng province with her parents and younger brother and sisters. Her mother earns a living by cultivating rice, while her father works as a blacksmith.
Malis has contended with epilepsy since early in her childhood. She manages this condition with medication. She was first evaluated by our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, in 2018, for bilateral ear discharge and bleeding. She was given medication to clear up the infection, but as a result of the infection, the tympanic membrane - or ear drum - in her left ear was perforated. As a consequence of this, Malis experiences ear pain, discharge, tinnitus, and a chronic headache. It is also difficult for her to communicate with the people around her.
Children’s Surgical Centre is seeking $487 to fund a myringoplasty procedure, which Malis is scheduled to undergo on May 16th, at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation in her left ear. The money being requested will cover Malis’ medications, supplies, and inpatient care.
Malis said: “I hope the surgery will clear up the infection and I will hear better.”

Malis underwent surgery to help her hear and communicate clearly.
Malis was referred by a friend and traveled two and a half hours to Children’s Surgical Centre for treatment. A perforated eardrum could have led to permanent hearing loss, and she was lucky to have successful surgery to repair it. After a night in the hospital, she was able to return home. She used antibiotic drops to decrease any risk of re-infection and returned to the hospital in a week for her stitches to be removed. This surgery will help Malis to live more comfortably and improve her hearing and communication. She looks forward to returning to work at the factory soon and eliminating the costs of the medicine she has been taking.
Malis shared, “I feel excited about the result after my operation. I can stop worrying about ear discharge, and I have better hearing and good communication with people around me. Thank you to the doctors and staff.”
