Son is a 48-year-old wife, mother, and grandmother from Cambodia who works in a garment factory and enjoys watching Thai dramas.
Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us, “One year ago, Son developed a pterygium in each eye. This causes her blurred vision, itchiness, and tearing.”
“It is hard for me to see anything clearly or go outside by myself,” says Son. “I cannot do any work very well.”
A pterygium is wing-shaped growth of tissue that appears as a thin or thick, white or pink membrane on the surface of the eye. The growth extends from the inner or outer corner of the eye toward the center and is typically noticed when it begins to cover the iris—the colored portion of the eye surrounding the pupil.
$150 will fund surgery to remove the pterygia from Son’s eyes. Funding also covers medication and follow-up care after surgery. CSC reports that after treatment, “Son will have less pain, burning, and irritation.”
Son shares, “I hope the [growths] on my eyes are successfully removed, and I won’t have to worry about it affecting me anymore. I want to easily see clearly and very well like before.”
