Nich is a 27-year-old former construction worker from Cambodia. He is married and has two children - a four-year-old and a 6 week-old. His wife works in a clothing factory in Kampong Cham province. He used to enjoy playing volleyball in the evenings before his injury.
Seven months ago, on his way home from work, he hit a large rock on the road with his motorbike. He fell hard on the concrete, causing damage to the nerves in his neck. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He is unable to lift his shoulder or use his left hand, which leaves him unable to work construction any longer. He visited a local government hospital, but they were not able to perform complicated surgery, and suggested he should visit our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, at Kien Khleang. Because of his wife’s job and childcare duties, Nich stayed home for seven months to watch the children until they could afford to travel to Phnom Penh.
Nich traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre, to receive treatment. This is the only center in the whole country where this treatment is available. On August 8th, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he hopes to regain movement and strength in his left arm. Nich can contribute $100 but needs help to raise $637 more to fund his procedure and care.
Nich said: “I hope that I will be able to use my hand again, so that I can return to work and support my family.”
