Sambath is a 65-year-old farmer who is married and lives with his children. He likes to watch the news on the TV, read books, and listen to old songs.
Sambath has a history of spinal tuberculosis (TB), an infectious bacterial disease. He has received treatment for TB for four months, but he continues to experience severe back pain. He has also developed an abscess in the tissue around his spine.
Sambath heard about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), from a neighbor. He traveled for two hours with his son to reach CSC for treatment.
On January 19, Sambath will undergo treatment. Surgeons at CSC will perform a procedure to drain the abscess to help treat Sambath’s spinal TB and allow him to feel more comfortable. CSC is requesting $224 for this procedure.

Sambath underwent a cyst removal.
Sambath’s treatment went well. Surgeons at CSC drained the abscess and found a large amount of dead and necrotic bone inside the abscess. One vertebrae was completely removed to allow access to the spinal canal and to ensure removal of the pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Surgeons then performed a bone graft to stabilize his bones.
Following the procedure, he had one week of physiotherapy at CSC before going home. His wound has healed nicely, and he does not experience pain. Sambath is now able to walk better than before.
Sambath says, “I’m very happy to go home and work to support my family again if possible.”
