Mercyline is a seven-year-old grade 2 student from Kenya, the firstborn in a family of two children. She dreams of becoming a teacher one day. Her parents are small-scale farmers who grow maize, beans, and coffee to provide for the family. Though life has been challenging, they work hard to support their children.
Mercyline was born with a condition called right rigid clubfoot, which causes her foot to twist out of shape. Her mother noted her condition when Mercyline was just two months old, but was unable to take her to hospital due to financial constraints. For over seven years, Mercyline has been having difficulties in walking and wearing shoes due to the clubfoot.
Mercyline’s mother learnt about our medical partner’s care center, AIC Cure International Hospital, and brought her to the facility’s mobile clinic in Kisumu. There, doctors recommended serial casting and surgery (triple arthrodesis) to correct the condition. Presently, Mercyline is at the hospital, undergoing serial casting to prepare for her surgery.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Mercyline receive treatment. On December 9th, she will undergo clubfoot repair surgery. The treatment will help her walk more comfortably, wear shoes, and continue her education without challenges brought by the condition. Now, Mercyline’s family needs help to fund this $1,286 to fund this procedure and post-treatment care.
Mercyline’s mother says: “I am so excited for my daughter’s treatment. I hope that she recovers quickly so she can walk normally like other children. That will make me very happy.”
