Nhiev is a 56-year-old man from Cambodia. He lives with his 86-year-old mother, and his younger brother in Kampot. His younger brother works as a rice farmer. Nhiev has three children, all of whom are married and have moved out. He now works as a hauler, transporting large logs from tree fields to customers, to support himself and his family. In his free time, he enjoys drinking coffee and chatting with his friends in the village.
About 31 years ago, Nhiev was bitten by a venomous snake on his right foot while moving a block of wood behind his house. He went to a Khmer traditional healer, and although the wound initially healed, it kept reopening over the years. About a year ago, the wound flared up again, causing him pain and producing discharge. It has increased in size, is infected and the bone is exposed. Nhiev is finding it hard to move around, and he is in chronic pain.
When Nhiev learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he and his mother traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. The medical team has determined that his right foot needs to be amputated because he has a Marjolin ulcer on his right foot - a rare and often overlooked malignancy that can develop in chronic wounds, burns, or scars. On June 6th, doctors will perform an amputation surgery on his right foot to relieve him from pain and prevent further complications. Now, Nhiev and his family need help to fund this $479 procedure.
Nhiev says, “I hope that I won’t be in pain anymore, and will no longer have to worry about my foot’s condition.”
