Lucia is a shy seven-year-old girl who lives with her parents, small-scale farmers, and four siblings in Tanzania. She enjoys jumping rope with her classmates and doing her schoolwork (she’s in class one) but has a hard time doing both because of the pain she has whenever she uses her left hand.
Lucia was born with unilateral cubitus varus which makes it difficult for her to lift objects with her left hand. Without corrective surgery her condition will not get better. “I like helping my mother out in the garden, but I can only use a hoe for a few minutes before my arm starts to hurt. I wish my left hand could work as my right hand; that way I’ll be able to do a lot more,” Lucia says.
For $555, Lucia will undergo surgery to correct her distal humerus. This operation will eliminate the pain Lucia feels and restore her left hand to its full potential. Let’s support Lucia and get her back to skipping rope, doing schoolwork and helping her mother in the garden.
