Yona is a 27-year-old father of one baby boy from Uganda. He engages in small-scale farming together with his wife to provide food for their household consumption, and to sell the surplus for income.
Two years ago, Yona began to experience troubling symptoms, including on-and-off abdominal pain and back pain. He sought medical attention from different clinics but was only given painkillers, which did not relieve his condition. Over time, the pain worsened, and he has been unable to carry out his regular activities at home or work. He frequently experiences abdominal fullness, especially after meals, and is unable to walk long distances.
In search of relief, Yona tried using local herbal remedies, without much relief. He was later encouraged by a friend, following advice from his pastor, to attend a medical outreach organized by our medical partner, Rwibaale Hospital. At the hospital, Yona was diagnosed with splenomegaly (enlarged spleen). Physicians have recommended a laparotomy, a surgery that opens up the abdominal cavity to treat his condition.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $230 to fund Yona’s surgery. On June 2nd, he will undergo surgery at Rwibaale Health Center. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully greatly improve his quality of life.
Yona says, “I am glad to receive support for my surgery. I have been suffering as I could not afford the treatment that I needed.”
