Nelson is a five-year-old boy from Uganda, and the fourth-born child in a family of five children. Nelson is currently in pre-school and lives with both his parents, although his mother has a mental health condition. Both his parents are small-scale farmers who grow maize for household consumption, and sell off the surplus to support the family.
For over three years now, Nelson has had an inguinal scrotal hernia, a condition where abdominal tissue protrude through a weak spot in the abdominal wall and extend down into the scrotal sac. It began with a swelling around his groin, which his mother noticed while bathing him. She initially tried to manage the condition through painkillers from a nearby clinic, but the pain continued to worsen.
As the pain became more severe, it began affecting Nelson’s daily life. Sometimes he was unable to attend school, and playing with other children became difficult. Eventually, the pain became so severe that Nelson shared with his grandmother, who decided to take him to Rwibaale Hospital for evaluation by a specialist. Fortunately, on September 14th, Nelson will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $234 to fund Nelson’s surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently.
Nelson’s grandmother says, “I hope that this surgery will help to reduce my grandson’s pain, and he will be able to study and engage with other children.”
