Vanna, a 61 year-old grandmother of 15 from Cambodia, works as a cleaner at a private school. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), adds, “In her free time Vanna does house work and watches social news on TV.”
“Three years ago Vanna developed a cataract in each eye,” CSC states. “This causes her blurred vision, irritation, tearing, and she is afraid of the sunshine.”
The most common cause of partial blindness worldwide, cataracts occur as proteins accumulate in the eye lens. Over time, this causes the eye lens to cloud–ultimately deteriorating vision.
For $225, Vanna’s cataracts will be surgically removed. A surgeon will make a small incision to remove the clouded lenses and replace them with new, artificial substitutes. Within a day of her recovery, Vanna will be able to see clearly again.
After recovering, Vanna plans to return to work and is excited to be able to visit her children more often.

Vanna’s operation was a success, and “she can see everything clearer than before,” shares our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
“I feel very happy that my eye can see everything clear again and now I’m not worried about my eye [becoming] blind,” Vanna says. “Now I can easily do my job and do any work very well and I also easily go to anywhere outside too.”
Her daughter, who accompanied her to the clinic, adds, “I feel very happy that my mother can see everything clear again. I am so thankful to the doctor and all the staff at CSC that helped [with] surgery for her eye.”
