Vanna, a 61 year-old grandmother of 15 from Cambodia, works as a cleaner at a private school. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), adds, “In her free time Vanna does house work and watches social news on TV.”
“Three years ago Vanna developed a cataract in each eye,” CSC states. “This causes her blurred vision, irritation, tearing, and she is afraid of the sunshine.”
The most common cause of partial blindness worldwide, cataracts occur as proteins accumulate in the eye lens. Over time, this causes the eye lens to cloud--ultimately deteriorating vision.
For $225, Vanna’s cataracts will be surgically removed. A surgeon will make a small incision to remove the clouded lenses and replace them with new, artificial substitutes. Within a day of her recovery, Vanna will be able to see clearly again.
After recovering, Vanna plans to return to work and is excited to be able to visit her children more often.
