Daniel is a calm 19-year-old student from Uganda, who enjoys playing volleyball in his free time. He comes from a family of four children, whose parents are small-scale farmers. Every day, Daniel travels more than 10 kilometres by bicycle to attend school. His parents shared that, due to financial constraints, they have difficulty paying school fees, which is why Daniel attends a distant, more affordable school.
Daniel has been in fairly good health, until three months ago when a small swelling appeared around his inguinal region. This was after he fell off a bicycle on his way from school. At first, he ignored the swelling as something that would go away together with the general pain from the fall. Over time, however, the swelling persisted and got worse, even as the rest of the body healed. Daniel went to a local health center and was given medication, but this did not help much. He was then referred to our medical partner’s care center, Rushoroza Hospital.
At the hospital, Daniel was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal muscles, causing a bulge in the groin area. A hernia repair surgery has been recommended, but his family is unable to raise the required funds. Presently, Daniel is completely unable to ride his bicycle, and is worried about missing school.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare is helping Daniel receive treatment. On March 5th, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner’s care center, Rushoroza Hospital. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Now, Daniel’s family needs help to fund this $170 procedure.
Daniel says, “I hope to get a chance to undergo the surgery that has been recommended, as I am in a lot of pain. I am unable to ride my bicycle to school, and hope that I can return to school soon.”
