Florence is 22 years old and is pregnant with her third child. She is an orphan living with an adoptive mother who saved her from an abusive relationship. Florence knows Lwala Community Alliance well; her adoptive mother works at Umama Salema, the maternal health program at the hospital!
She respects Lwala’s work and takes to heart the advice given to prospective mothers. When asked what she has learned, Florence said, “I was told about the danger signs of pregnancy and to rush to the hospital if I am sick. I also made a birth plan, sleep under a bed net, and know how to make safe drinking water.” These are all great preventative measures to care for mom and baby, but healthcare is equally important.
For $215, Florence will receive clinical prenatal care, delivery at a hospital and a
post-birth checkup. Florence told a Watsi coordinator at Lwala, “I hope for a safe
delivery at Lwala Hospital and I pray for a good job after delivery so that I can help
my children by buying them clothes taking them to school and feeding them well.”

Florence received maternal health services to safely deliver her baby.
“My delivery was safe and I thank God for protecting me through this, with the treatment I received in the health facility I am certain that I will soon recover and participate in my usual chores and help my family,” said Florence after delivering a healthy baby.
“I do not know what would have happened if I had tried home birth because even though I had a safe delivery, I fainted twice and did not know what what went wrong. But at last, I and my baby are safe and alive.”
Florence also hopes that other mothers-to-be will seek the same care that she did. “I pray for the Lwala health facility to continue providing health services to our community and beyond,” she said. “I would like to advise my fellow mothers that home birth is no longer in the picture of today’s lifestyle and I am proud to be among the women who have made in the hospital.”
