Allen is a 66-year-old woman, and a devoted mother of six children from Uganda. She is a small-scale farmer who has spent most of her life working hard to provide for her family. Allen separated from her husband about 35 years ago and has since raised her children single handedly. Despite the many challenges she faced, she remained determined to support her family through farming and other small income-generating activities. For many years, Allen was healthy and active. She worked in her farm daily, cared for her children, and managed her household responsibilities independently. However, her life took an unexpected turn when she began experiencing unexplained lower abdominal pain, accompanied by swelling. The symptoms would appear and disappear from time to time. At first, Allen hoped the problem was temporary and would resolve on its own. But as the months passed, the swelling gradually increased in size and became associated with severe pain. Activities that she once performed with ease, such as walking long distances, bending while farming, carrying produce, and performing household chores, became increasingly difficult. As a single mother who has spent decades struggling to care for her family, Allen found the situation particularly distressing. Farming is her main source of livelihood, and the worsening pain made her fear that she might eventually become unable to work and support herself and her family. Determined to find relief, Allen sought medical attention at nearby health facilities. However, the swelling and pain continued to recur, and she was eventually referred to Rushoroza Hospital for further evaluation. After a thorough examination by the surgical team, Allen was diagnosed with a bilateral inguinal hernia, a condition that occurs when abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the lower abdominal muscles, causing a bulge in the groin area. The doctors explained that the condition required surgical repair to prevent worsening symptoms and possible complications. Unfortunately, the cost of surgery is beyond what Allen can comfortably afford. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Allen receive treatment. On July 21st, she will undergo hernia repair surgery to regain her health, resume work in her farm, and continue living independently with dignity. Now, Allen needs help to fund this $170 procedure. She says, “For many years I have worked hard to raise my children on my own. This pain and swelling have made it difficult for me to farm and care for myself as I used to. I am grateful that the doctors finally explained my condition and recommended treatment. I pray that I will receive the surgery, heal, and return to my regular life.”

Leng is a 60-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He is married and has two sons, three daughters, and eight grandchildren. He lives with his wife, who is also a farmer, and his youngest daughter, who works at a beauty salon. In his free time, Leng enjoys watching volleyball. About two years ago, Leng developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, similar to looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Leng learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On July 7th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $263 procedure. Leng said, "I hope that after my cataract surgery, my vision will improve, my sensitivity to bright light will go away, and I will be able to return to growing rice without difficulty."

Rodas is a four-year-old girl from Ethiopia. She lives in a loving home with her older sister, her stay-at-home mother who cares for her daily, and her father, who works tirelessly as an electrician to provide for the family. Despite their strong bond and dedication, her condition creates a heavy, continuous strain on their household. Three years ago, Rodas started to experience snoring, mouth breathing, struggling to swallow, and loss of appetite. Nights are especially grueling. Her swollen tonsils make breathing and sleeping difficult, leaving her parents awake for hours trying to soothe her pain, bring down fevers, and administer medication. This ongoing health struggle deeply affects her day-to-day life. Frequent sickness forces her to miss school, making it hard to keep up with her classmates or enjoy regular childhood activities. Rodas was recently diagnosed with enlarged tonsils, which, if not treated, will cause her symptoms to persist and possibly intensify over time. Our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, is requesting $700 to fund a tonsillectomy for Rodas, which is scheduled to take place on July 20th. Surgeons will remove her tonsils, hopefully relieving Rodas of her symptoms and helping her live more comfortably. "We just want these painful nights to end. We want our little girl to sleep peacefully, play with her friends, and grow up healthy. Healing her will bring our family the peace we so desperately need," said Rodas's parents.
