Meet Sovin, a 26-year-old university student who studies English in Cambodia. He also enjoys playing football, listening to pop songs, and playing computer games.
Sovin fell down from a tree when he was six-years-old and fractured parts of his right arm. Unfortunately, he did not receive any proper treatment at the time. Though Sovin recently had a radial head resection to repair the fractures, his right forearm atrophied and his right thumb is still in an abnormal position. He cannot write or hold anything.
Sovin travelled four hours with his brother to reach Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) for treatment, where doctors noted a loss of thenar muscle and a partial median nerve injury in Sovin’s right arm. They recommend a flexor digitorum superficialis opponensplasty to reconstruct the position and function of his thumb.
$392 will pay for this procedure as well as any other post-operative care. After the surgery, Sovin will have improved function of his hand and be able to return to his studies.

Sovin’s surgery to reconstruct the position of his thumb went very well. During the procedure, a tendon in his hand was halved and redirected from another finger, allowing for the thumb to assume a correct position with greater flexibility than before. He had two weeks of physical therapy after the treatment, and will follow up with another appointment in a month to check his recovery progress. Already, his wound is healing and he has regained some function of his thumb.
With his hand function improving, Sovin looks forward to returning to classes at the local university where he studies English. After nearly twenty years of pain and difficulty due to an incorrectly healed fracture, he is very thankful to all who helped him have this restorative surgery.
