Ryan is currently in Grade 5 and is the fourth-born in a family of five children from Kenya. His father grows maize, sweet potatoes, and cassava, but their livelihood has been significantly affected by Ryan’s condition. He now spends most of his time accompanying Ryan to hospitals in search of proper treatment, leaving little time to work on the farm. Ryan’s mother has also been unable to work, as she must stay home to care for their other children. The family’s situation has become even more difficult as Ryan’s siblings can no longer continue their education due to the lack of school fees.
Last year, Ryan accidentally fell and developed severe leg pain and swelling. He was taken to the hospital and treated for cellulitis with antibiotics, but he did not improve. At another facility, an X-ray revealed a pathological fracture, and he underwent surgery. Unfortunately, his condition worsened, and he developed a draining sinus tract with exposed bone that persisted for months.
Eventually, Ryan was referred to our medical partner’s care center, AIC Kapsowar Hospital, where Ryan was diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis, an infection in the bone. His treatment began immediately. The infected hardware was removed, and he successfully underwent a sequestrectomy, the removal of dead or dying bone or tissue. He later received a free flap procedure for soft tissue coverage, which also went well. Antibiotic beads were placed to help clear the deep bone infection, and he was eventually discharged home to continue his recovery.
Ryan has returned for the next essential stage of treatment. He requires removal of the antibiotic beads, further debridement of the infected bone, and placement of an external fixator. Unfortunately, he has already exhausted his insurance provision for surgeries. His family has no means to pay for the procedure, yet it is urgently needed to control the infection and allow proper bone healing.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $694 to fund Ryan’s surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Ryan and his family are humbly appealing for support to help him undergo this crucial surgery. Your assistance will give him the chance to fully recover, walk without pain, return to school, and continue being the joyful young boy he has always been.
Ryan’s father shared, “My son has been through a very difficult journey, and we have exhausted all our resources. Please assist us in meeting the surgery costs.”
