Siyam is a young student from Ethiopia. Growing up in a lively farming household with four sisters and a brother, this nine-year-old girl is full of life. However, a year ago, a serious accident involving a sharp piece of tin injured her right small finger.
A year ago, a small, sharp piece of tin fell from the roof of her family’s house. It accidentally struck her finger, causing a deep cut that eventually healed into a stiff contracture. Despite receiving immediate medical care, the injury resulted in a post-traumatic contracture. Today, her finger remains stiff and permanently bent, limiting her movement. Because her finger is locked in a bent position, simply holding a pencil has become a daily battle. She now struggles to keep up with her classmates during writing and drawing lessons.
Siyam’s family learned about our medical partner, Saglan Wajee General Hospital, and sought treatment. On February 21st, surgeons will perform a contracture release surgery that will allow her to write easily and give her the confidence to play freely with her friends. Now, she needs help to fund this $500 procedure.
Siyam shared, “I just want to have a normal childhood again. I am so excited to finally be able to write comfortably in class. Most of all, I can’t wait to hold my sisters’ and friends’ hands without any pain or trouble.”

This surgery will completely transform her life by gently straightening her finger, which has been permanently bent for a long time. Right now, her finger acts like a physical barrier that gets in the way of everything she tries to do. It makes the simple act of holding a pencil or keeping her notebook steady a daily struggle. Once the procedure is done, that frustration will vanish, allowing her to write smoothly and focus on her lessons without anything holding her back.
Siyam’s parents said, “The future looks wonderful and full of light. We believe this treatment will finally allow our daughter to let go of the painful memories from her accident and step into a bright future where anything is possible. As a family, we are most excited to see her enjoy the simple, beautiful things again—like opening her hand completely to give a big wave to her friends. For a whole year, her hand has been stiff and stuck, but soon she will be able to reach out and hold her sisters’ hands without any pain or struggle holding her back.”
