“I hope I can see everything clearer so I can go to the pagoda [Buddhist temple] and anywhere outside by myself easily,” says Thean, a 53-year-old man from Cambodia who has lived with cataracts for the last five years.
Thean’s cataracts, which developed in both eyes, cause him blurred vision, irritation, and tearing. “He can’t see everything clearly, do any work, or go anywhere outside without help,” says our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
“Thean is married with four sons, three daughters, and seven grandchildren,” shares CSC. “He is a farmer and enjoys watching TV in his free time.” Thean traveled five hours with his daughter to reach CSC, where he hopes to get medical help for his vision impairment so he can get back to his work, family, and the activities he enjoys.
For $225, Thean can undergo phacoemulsification cataract surgery, during which doctors will break apart the clouded lenses and replace them with clear implants. After this procedure, Thean’s vision will be restored and he will no longer have to be concerned about becoming blind. In addition to visiting the Pagoda and going anywhere outside by himself, Thean also looks forward to planting vegetables around his home after surgery.
