Mouy Im is a 25-year-old woman living in Cambodia with her son. She sells sugarcane juice for her income. She enjoys looking after her son, washing her clothes, and selling her sugarcane.
On March 22, Mouy Im accidentally crushed her left hand in her sugarcane machine. Mouy Im dislocated joints of the middle finger and index finger, making it difficult for her to use her left hand. She went to a health center and referral hospital for treatment, but her symptoms did not improve. She knew her sister had a successful eye procedure at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), so she traveled with her husband to CSC to seek further evaluation and possible treatment.
Mouy Im’s surgeons recommend an arthroplasty procedure of Mouy Im’s fingers, which will reform the joints to allow for proper mobility and strength. The total procedure costs $450 and covers medication, supplies, and four nights of inpatient care. The procedure is scheduled for May 3.
Following her recovery, Mouy Im will be able to use her hand easily again. She will return to making sugarcane juice to support her family.
