“Martina is a patient to be proud of,” says her doctor at our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq. As a 60-year-old woman living with Diabetes in Guatemala, she has had little resources to control her condition. However, over the past five years, she has worked extremely hard to get her disease under control.
One of the most problematic symptoms of Martina’s diabetes is the deterioration in her retina and the clouding of her lenses. This severely impacts her vision, making life difficult. Her night vision is particularly poor, and she has trouble with fine work, such as weaving.
Luckily, Martina’s work to control her diabetes has made her a great candidate for eye surgery. For $1500, she will receive a stabilization of her retinal disease and removal of cataracts, leading to major improvements in both her quality of life and overall independence. Let’s help Martina see clearly again!

Martina received cataract surgery to improve her vision.
Her doctors report, “Martina had her cataract surgery and is at home now recuperating nicely. Her eyes healed well without any problems. She has noted improved clarity and colors after the surgery - the “world seems brighter.” She does still have significant visual problems, because underneath the cataracts she also had diabetic retinal disease, but removing the cataracts will allow her to also have treatment for that, which we are arranging.”
Martina herself says, “I am thankful for the help I’ve received. My diabetes has been a life long struggle for me, and a constant source of financial stress. Thanks to Watsi and WK, I have been able to get important medical care that would otherwise be completely out of my financial range.”
