Lucia is a baby from southern Bolivia. Her mother stays home with her, and her father is a delivery driver. Lucia was born with a heart condition called coarctation of the aorta. A major blood vessel leading to the heart is too small, which leaves Lucia weak and unable to properly grow. Additionally, she has turner syndrome. Lucia needs surgery to open the aorta to its full size. This will allow blood to flow more easily so she can grow up healthy. Lucia's mother states: "Our family is so happy to know that our daughter can finally have this surgery; we have been hoping for this opportunity since she was born."

Yany is an 18-year-old student--her parents are both rice farmers in Sihanouk province, where they live with her four other siblings. She shares her home with her three brothers and one sister who also attend school and support the family rice crops. As the oldest daughter, she helps her mother keep the house clean and cook for the family when she is not in school. In August 2020, Yany was involved in a motorbike accident that resulted in a fractured right femur. Her parents took her to a local hospital, where she underwent a procedure to implant hardware to facilitate the healing process. Her bone has healed well and she now needs the hardware removed. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On February 2nd, Yany will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will cost $304. This will allow her to continue to strengthen her leg and focus on her studies. Yany said: "I hope after surgery, my leg will heal well, and I will have no pain any more."

Alexander is a 7 year-old student from Haiti. Alexander lives with his parents and younger sister in a small rural community. He is in the first grade and likes going to school and helping his family with farm chores. Alexander has a cardiac condition called double ventricular septal defect. Two holes exist between the two lower chambers of his heart; blood leaks through these holes without passing through Alexander's lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving him weak and short of breath. Alexander will need to travel to the Dominican Republic to receive treatment. On January 30th, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will sew patches over the holes so that blood can no longer leak through them. Alexander's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep and follow-up. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Alexander's family. Alexander's mother shares: "Our family feels very blessed to know that our son can have this chance for surgery!"
