Leakhena is a 34-year-old corn farmer from Cambodia. She lives in Kampong Thum province with her husband and two young children. Her oldest child started kindergarten this year, and her youngest just turned four years old. To support the family, her husband works as a house painter. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her children and gardening around the family home.
Two years ago, Leakhena was involved in a car accident that caused a fracture in her mandible. She went to a hospital in the city, where surgeons implanted hardware in her chin to stabilize the fracture. Now the fracture has healed, but the metalwork causes pain and difficulty talking and eating.
Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, can help. On November 13th, Leakhena will undergo a hardware removal procedure, which will relieve her pain and allow her to eat and speak more comfortably. Leakhena can contribute $75 to her care, but needs help to raise $303 more.
Leakhena said, “After the surgery, I hope that I can heal quickly and take care of my family without pain in my jaw.”

Leakhena traveled six hours by public mini-bus to meet with Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) surgeons for a consultation and to have the hardware in her jaw removed. This surgery will greatly reduce her chronic pain and make it easier for her to eat, speak, and manage everyday tasks. Once she has fully recovered, Leakhena will be able to talk freely with her family, enjoy meals without discomfort, and focus on caring for her children—activities that had become difficult and limiting before. This procedure will not only improve her health but also restore her independence, comfort, and confidence in daily life.
Leakhena said, “I am very grateful for this surgery and for the care I am receiving. I hope to heal quickly so I can take care of my family, enjoy life without pain, and return to my normal routine.”
