Bunrith is a high school student from Cambodia. He lives with his mother and three siblings in Kandal Province, while his father works as a truck driver in another province. Bunrith just completed the 9th grade and enjoys science. At home, he likes to eat rice with stir-fried beef. In his free time, he enjoys helping his mother cook for the family and watching cooking channels on social media. In May 2023, Bunrith was in a road traffic accident which resulted in a fracture of his right ankle. He was taken to a private clinic in Phnom Penh where he underwent an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery. During the procedure, the doctor fixated a plate and screws to facilitate the healing of his fracture. Now, the fracture has healed, but the metalwork is uncomfortable and it is difficult for him to walk. His family does not have enough savings to support further surgeries at the hospital where Bunrith was initially treated. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On July 11th, Bunrith will undergo a hardware removal procedure that will help him walk easily again. Bunrith's family was able to contribute $100 towards his medical costs but needs help to raise $204 more to fund the procedure. Bunrith hopes that he will be able to return to school soon, and be able to walk more comfortably.

Kyat is a 40-year-old man who lives with his wife and two children in a village in Karen State, Burma. His son and daughter are both students, and his wife is a teacher in a primary school. Kyat was a farmer, raising chickens and pigs, but he currently cannot work. His wife's salary is not enough to cover their basic needs. In his free time, Kyat likes to play games, listen to stories, and, before his injury, play football. On February 16, 2024, Kyat was offered a job climbing tamarind trees to collect fruit. He fell from the tree while picking the fruit, and his right leg was trapped in a hole. Kyat was unable to stand and was in severe pain. The next day, he was taken to a hospital where an x-ray confirmed Kyat had a right femur bone fracture and needed surgery. Because of the ongoing civil conflict and fighting in Burma, hospitals could not accommodate Kyat. He was asked to go to Thailand to see if he could get surgery there. As fighting continued and roads were flooded, Kyat was unable to travel to Thailand until August 2024, six months after his injury. During this time, he was unable to walk without a walker, was barely able to put any weight on his right leg, and was in a lot of pain. Once he reached Thailand, Kyat was admitted to our medical partner's care center, Mae Sot Hospital, and scheduled for surgery. With the help of our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, Kyat will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bone and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for August 16th and will cost $1,500. This surgery will help Kyat to walk, free from pain. Kyat is asking for help to fund this medical treatment. Kyat said, “I was very disappointed when I could not walk or do anything for my family. I feel very sorry for my wife because she has her own work, too, and still has to look after me. After I receive the successful surgery, I will go back to work as a farmer and support my family."

Kyawt is a 22-month-old baby girl from Burma. She lives with her parents in Karen State. Her father is a mechanic at the car workshop and her mother is a homemaker. The income only covers their daily expenses and sometimes her grandparents support them. In her free time, Kyawt enjoys dancing and playing with her toys. Kyawt was born with a swelling in her nasal and forehead region, diagnosed as a nasofrontal meningocele. The swelling on her forehead increases in size, especially when she cries. Doctors want Kyawt to undergo a CT scan, a procedure in which x-ray images taken from several angles are combined to produce cross-sectional images of the body. This scan will hopefully help doctors diagnose her condition and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $693 to cover the cost of Kyawt's CT scan and care, scheduled for June 27th. Kyawt's mother is worried about her condition and said, “I am thankful to BCMF for helping my baby. I am very concerned about her operation as it seems to be a major surgery. I wish her operation to be successful and I want to see her pretty and cute face like other kids. I want her to be an educated person when she grows up.”
