Im is a 69-year-old farmer with two sons, three daughters, and many grandchildren. Im lives with her youngest daughter. She enjoys exercising in the morning, cooking for her family, and caring for her grandchildren.
She developed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the right side of her face 10 years ago. It has grown over time and has become very uncomfortable, causing itchiness and pain. She has tried applying ointment from the pharmacy and Khmer traditional medicine treatments, to no avail.
When Im learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On May 17th, surgeons at CSC will perform an excision, histology, and rhomboid flap procedure to remove the skin cancer. Now, she needs help to fund this $673 procedure.
Im says, “I hope my face heals and I do not experience this pain again.”

Im underwent skin cancer surgery.
Im was glad her neighbor told her about the Children’s Surgical Centre and had successful surgery to remove the growth on her face. Surgeons excised her lesion and used healthy skin from her back to repair the surgical site. She will rest at the hospital for several days, and take antibiotics to ensure the site does not get infected. She is hopeful the skin graft will cover the defect and it will heal well within several weeks. She is happy to be rid of the worrying lesion and looks forward to resuming her full life. She is excited to get back to cooking and taking care of her grandchildren, which allows her daughter to work. This will improve her family financially, and ensure that the grandchildren are watched while their parents work.
Im said: “I am relieved the doctors were able to remove the growth from my face because I was worried I would be disfigured from cancer. I want to be able to go outside again without being ashamed of how my face looks. Thank you to the surgeons who performed a miracle on my face, and to the donors who made it possible.”
