Baguma is a 48-year-old father of six from Uganda who works as a banana and tomato farmer. Two years ago, Baguma developed a painful swelling in his abdominal region. The swelling becomes more painful after meals and when he lifts heavy items.
Baguma has an epigastric hernia, a condition where his fat protrudes through his abdominal wall. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), shares,”Baguma never went to a hospital because he knew he could not afford treatment.”
$220 will cover the hernia repair surgery he needs. After surgery, he hopes to expand his banana farm and care for his livestock, so that he can get enough money to pay for the education of his children. AMHF further explains, “We expect that after the treatment, the risk of intestinal incarceration, obstruction, and strangulation would also be eliminated.”
Baguma shares, “I have lived with this hernia for two years. It is painful and makes me feel uncomfortable because I cannot work as I used to.”
