Emmanuel is a young 22-year-old man from Kenya. His childhood was marked by hardship, and due to difficult circumstances, he dropped out of school in Class 4. With limited education and no family support, Emmanuel left home in search of work to survive and meet his basic needs.
His journey led him to Elgeiyo Marakwet County, where a kind family in Kapsowar took him in and offered him work as a herder. Since then, Emmanuel has worked diligently on the farm, assisting with cattle herding and general farm duties. From this work, he earns a small monthly wage of approximately $20, just enough to cover food and basic necessities, with very little left to save.
On 9th January this year, while carrying out his normal duties, Emmanuel was cutting Napier grass when he accidentally sustained a deep cut to his wrist. He immediately called for help, and those nearby managed to control the bleeding before he was rushed to our medical partner’s care center, AIC Kapsowar Hospital, for medical attention.
At the hospital, Emmanuel received first aid, including a tetanus injection, antibiotics, and pain medication. An X-ray was performed, which did not show any obvious bone fracture but revealed a deep soft-tissue injury. Upon further examination, it was discovered that Emmanuel was unable to move his hand properly, indicating ruptured tendons. The wound was sutured to prevent infection; however, our surgeon advised that urgent tendon repair surgery is required to restore full function to his hand.
Without this procedure, Emmanuel risks permanent disability, which would make it impossible for him to continue working and earning a livelihood. Unfortunately, Emmanuel is not registered with the national health insurance because he lacks a national ID. As a result, he has no medical cover and is unable to afford the required surgery. Given his very limited income, he cannot raise the funds on his own.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Emmanuel receive treatment. On January 12th, he will undergo tendon repair surgery, which will help to restore the use of his hand, and provide him the opportunity to continue working and providing for himself. Now, Emmanuel needs help to fund this $582 procedure.
He says: “I didn’t anticipate to be in such a state. Please help me, as I don’t have any money nor medical cover to cater for my bills.”
