Michael is a 57-year old police officer from Kenya, and a father of five children. As a dedicated family man, Michael has always worked hard to provide for his family, but being the sole breadwinner means his income is stretched across many responsibilities. He also has existing loans and financial commitments, making this period especially difficult. He has undergone several surgeries, and his medical insurance approvals have now been exhausted. At one point, he had to pay for treatment out of pocket and even sold part of his maize harvest to help settle his medical bills. He shares that currently, it is difficult to source funds to continue paying for the treatment that he still needs.
In March 2025, Michael was involved in a tragic road traffic accident while on leave. He was traveling back home in a lorry that was carrying poles, when it suddenly lost control and swerved off the road. The driver was fortunate to escape, but Michael, who was seated in the co-driver’s seat, was thrown out of the vehicle and sustained multiple severe fractures on both his lower legs and his left thighbone. He received initial treatment at another facility and continued with follow-up care and postoperative management.
However, despite the treatment, his recovery was not progressing as expected. Almost a year later, Michael went to our medical partner’s care center, AIC Kapsowar, hoping for better care. He was experiencing painful swelling and instability of both legs. He reported that his legs would buckle at the fracture sites whenever he attempted to bear weight, suggesting that the fractures had failed to unite properly. Further investigations, including X-rays, revealed osteomyelitis (bone infection) of the right leg, and he was diagnosed with septic non-union. Michael was taken to the theatre, where the infected hardware was removed, a thorough surgical washout was performed, and an antibiotic spacer was inserted to help clear the infection.
Michael returned to hospital in May 2026, and successfully underwent an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) procedure. However, his treatment journey continued, as he had also been found to have a femoral non-union and a left ankle malunion requiring further staged reconstruction. In June 2026, Michael underwent another successful procedure involving exchange nailing and bone grafting to address the femoral non-union. He is now awaiting correction of the left ankle malunion. This next stage will require the removal of existing surgical hardware, followed by complex ankle fixation using plates and screws. Due to the demands of his job and his current condition, Michael has been unable to work and earn additional income since his accident.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Michael receive treatment. On July 2nd, he is scheduled to undergo a fracture repair procedure, so he can continue his path to recovery and regain strength and movement. Now, Michael needs help to fund this $1,014 procedure.
Michael says “I came to AIC Kapsowar Hospital with a lot of hope, and I can testify what the Lord had done for me to date. I look forward to the day I will fully walk independently without support, so that I can go back to work and serve humanity.”
