Yu Bin is a five-year-old kindergartener from Cambodia. She lives in Kampong Chnang province with her two siblings. Yu Bin is the middle child and just started school last year. Her parents run a food stall outside of a large garment factory complex to support the family. When she grows up, Yu Bin hopes to become a nurse. For now, she enjoys school and playing with her friends and siblings.
When she was two years old, Yu Bin accidentally burned her hand with boiling water when her grandmother was cooking. She was initially treated at a local clinic, but developed scar contractures on three of her fingers after a few weeks. She is unable to use her hand at school, has difficulty with everyday tasks, and feels uncomfortable around the other children.
When Yu Bin learned about our medical partner, the Children’s Surgical Centre, her family traveled for three hours to seek treatment. On August 6th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help her improve function in her right hand and fingers. Now, she needs help to fund this $652 procedure.
Yu Bin’s mom shared, “I hope she can have surgery so it will be easier for her to focus on school and use her hand like before the accident.”

Yu Bin was reluctant to leave her mother’s side, but the kind nurses allayed her fears. After surgery, she spent several days in the pediatric ward, where she received pain medication when needed, and antibiotics to decrease the risk of infection. Her mother worked with the physiotherapy team to learn exercises to strengthen her flexibility and grip. This surgery will help Yu Bin use her right hand and support her age-appropriate motor skill development She will be able to hold a pencil, write, and take part in school activities. She will also be able to play games with friends and help with small tasks at home, activities she could not do easily before surgery.
