15-year-old Mirriam is the eighth born child in a family of nine children, living in Kenya. Her parents are small-scale farmers. Despite the challenges she faces, Mirriam is a bright Grade 9 pupil, who dreams of becoming an engineer in the future.
Mirriam was born with bilateral clubfoot, a condition in which both feet are twisted out of shape. Because her parents did not know that treatment was available, she grew up without any medical intervention. Over the years, this condition not only made walking difficult, but also lowered Mirriam’s self-esteem, and interfered with her studies. Her story began to change when her teacher learned about our medical partner’s care center, AIC CURE Hospital through a WhatsApp message, and shared the information with her family.
Mirriam underwent serial casting and surgical treatment on her left foot, which has since healed well. Mirriam now requires treatment on her right foot.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Mirriam receive treatment. On October 14th, she will undergo corrective surgery on her right foot so she can complete her treatment and be able to walk comfortably, and focus on her studies without the health challenges that have held her back. Most importantly, it will bring her closer to her dream of becoming an engineer and living a full, independent life. Now, Mirriam’s family needs help to fund this$1,286 procedure.
Mirriam says: “I am looking forward to walking better, continuing with my studies, and achieving my future goals. I’m also glad that my friends will not make fun of me anymore.”
