Provia is a widowed 65-year-old small-scale farmer from Uganda. She gave birth to 12 children, though sadly, one passed away. She never had the opportunity to attend school. Both she and her late husband made their living through farming.
Provia’s symptoms began 30 years ago. She developed a swelling at the front of her neck. It started small and painless but has gradually increased in size. Provia now suffers from respiratory issues, including chest pain, headaches, and dizziness, and can no longer carry heavy loads on her head. Unfortunately, her worsening condition has forced her to stop farming, and though she seeks medical attention, her family cannot afford the cost of surgery. Provia was diagnosed with a nontoxic goiter and surgery is necessary to prevent her condition from deteriorating further.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is helping Provia access treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on August 23rd, where surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. The cost of the procedure is $333, and Provia and her family are seeking financial support to cover it.
Provia shares, “My productivity has been negatively affected by my current health condition. I pray that I may get well through surgery so that I may live a better and more productive life once again.”
