Sambath is a two-year-old toddler from Cambodia. He is the only child in his family. His parents travel around Phnom Penh and the adjoining province, selling drinks during festival ceremonies. They bring him along when traveling from one province to another. His mother shared that he enjoys snacks and milk, and particularly likes playing with his father.
Sambath suffered severe burns to his left arm and hand when he slipped and stepped into hot oil when he was 12 months old. Burn scar contractures have developed, causing the skin to tighten around the burn, resulting in fixed flexion of all fingers on his left hand. Sambath is unable to move or use his left fingers due to the burn scar contractures. His parents are worried that he may have trouble doing normal things like dressing, walking, eating, or playing as he grows.
Sambath’s family learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), and sought help. On August 2nd, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery to release the tight scar tissue, which will help improve the range of motion in Sambath’s fingers. Sambath’s family was able to contribute $100 towards his medical care but needs help raising the remaining $395 in funds.
Sambath’s mother said: “I hope my son will be able to use his hand easily when he grows up and starts school.”
