“Five years ago, Grace was crossing a foot bridge on her way home from her vending business when she slipped and fell,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “She received emergency care but has lived with the pain of the fracture since then.”
Grace is a 55-year-old mother of four children from Kenya. Because of her accident, she is now unable to walk without support. While she used to sell bananas at her local market, Grace has also been unable to work for the past several years due to pain.
She has a fractured femur, and needs an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) to reunite her bone. An ORIF procedure will open the area around the broken bone and realign it, so that the two ends of the bone are no longer far apart.
“If the surgery is not done soon, Grace could develop an infection,” says AMHF. “Or the mode of treatment could become more complicated to a total hip replacement.”
Grace’s husband passed away thirty years ago, and she raised her children alone. “She has seen her children through school but unfortunately none is currently employed,” AMHF explains. “One of her sons passed away a few years ago while her other three sons are suffering from alcoholism and are still living at home.” Grace’s friends and relatives have helped to subsidize her treatment, but she is unable to raise the full funds. For $580, we can help.
“Life had been very hard for me since I fell down,” Grace shares. “I have not been able to support myself and my sons are not in a position to offer any help. I am happy that I met you and Watsi. I am very grateful for your support.”
