Bamutenga is a 63-year-old woman from Uganda. She is a small-scale farmer, and has eight children, some of whom are still in school and some of whom are married and/or working.
Bamutenga has had a swelling in her neck for ten years, which has caused her pain and difficulty breathing and has made it hard to carry anything on her head. Bamutenga was diagnosed with a goiter (a swelling caused by an enlarged thyroid gland). The recommended treatment is a thyroidectomy—removal of all or part of the thyroid. If she is not treated, the symptoms will persist and may cause more difficulty breathing. Her treatment is scheduled for October 17.
Bamutenga says, “I hope to be relieved of this condition and I continue with cultivation after surgery.”
Watsi is requesting $240 to help fund Bamutenga’s procedure.
