Chaka is a 27-year-old student from Mali whose spine was fractured in a tragic mining accident.
Chaka lives in Mali with his brother while pursuing a degree in Sociology. He dreams of one day having a job that will allow him to serve others and support his family.
In the meantime, Chaka sometimes takes on extra work to help his brother with household expenses. He recently spent a school break mining gold in a small village. A landslide occurred where he was mining, and Chaka was caught in the middle. The incident left him with a fractured spine and paralyzed legs.
Doctors at our medical partner in Mali believe Chaka’s paralysis is reversible. They say that with surgery, there’s a good chance he will walk again. However, the $1,500 treatment is more than Chaka and his family could ever dream of paying.
Let’s help Chaka receive the surgery he needs to get on the road to recovery!

Chaka received surgery to treat his spinal fracture and paralysis.
Chaka’s operation was the success his doctor’s were hoping for—he has regained sensation and use of his legs. His condition is expected to continue to improve over the next four or five months. Eventually, Chaka will be able to use his legs to their full capacity and walk normally again. In the meantime, Chaka is continuing to work towards his sociology degree so he can “serve others and care for his family.”
Chaka says that he once again “believes in the future.” Our medical partner says that he: “Thanks everyone who helped support his treatment, it is because of them that he is able to finish his studies and care for his family.”
