Eric is a 46-year-old father of four children from Kenya. He previously worked as a boda boda rider, but has not been able to work for the last five years due to complications resulting from a serious road accident.
In 2021, Erick was on his motorcycle when he was hit by a car. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where, after several examinations, doctors determined that he had sustained serious injuries to his right hand and right leg. He was later referred to another hospital, where he underwent surgery. Erick continued attending his clinic appointments and, initially, his recovery was progressing well.
In 2023, however, Erick developed what initially appeared to be a small pimple at the site of the previous surgery. It later developed into a wound that became swollen and caused him severe pain. A friend referred him to AIC Kijabe Hospital, where after assessment, doctors found that his right leg had developed an infection and required surgical intervention.
Erick underwent surgery, during which a metal plate was inserted to support and stabilise his leg. He initially made good progress with recovery at home. The pain subsided, and the wound began to heal, giving him hope that he would eventually regain his ability to work and support his family. Unfortunately, in May this year, Erick began experiencing severe pain in his right leg again. Two months later, he returned to the hospital for further assessment. Medical examinations revealed that the metal plate in his right leg had broken. As a result, he requires a fracture repair procedure to address the problem and continue his treatment and recovery.
Erick’s condition has had a profound impact on his life. The ongoing pain and complications with his leg have significantly affected his mobility and ability to work. The pain is particularly intense at night, making it difficult for him to sleep. Having previously depended on boda boda transport work to earn a living, he has been unable to return to the work that enabled him to support his family. This has left his wife and four children in a very difficult situation. Erick is currently facing severe financial difficulties. His wife is unemployed, and the family struggles to meet even their basic needs. His four children have also been unable to attend school because the family cannot afford school fees.
Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On September 4th, Eric will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. With successful treatment, Eric has an opportunity to regain better function of his leg, reduce his suffering, and hopefully return to work so that he can once again provide for his family. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $1,500 to fund this procedure.
“I wish to be able to walk again, and care for my family as they depend on me,” Erick shared.
