Sr Maria is is a catholic nun from Benebikira sisters from Rwanda and has been a nun for 25 years. She is a teacher by profession teaching at GS kanyanza senior secondary school. She is only left with her mother as her father died when she was still young. She has two sisters who are married and farmers to grow food for themselves. Being the only one working among all her sibling, she is the one responsible for taking care of her sisters’ children. She fosters all the seven children paying for their school fees and other basic needs.
One year ago, Sr Maria began to experience troubling symptoms, including a neck swelling. This causes her difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, pain in swallowing, and profuse swelling whenever she does an active role. She was diagnosed with nodular goiter and needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Sr Maria receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on September 5th at our medical partner’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $252, and she and her family need help raising money.
Sr Maria says, “I hope to get well again. I want to feel well and myself with a full recovery and healing.”
