Mirleiny is a five-year-old girl from Haiti. She lives with her parents and two older brothers in a neighborhood outside of the capital. She is currently in kindergarten and likes drawing and dancing. Mirleiny has a cardiac condition called atrial septal defect. A hole exists between the two upper chambers of her heart; blood leaks through this hole, leaving her weak and short of breath. Mirleiny is scheduled to fly to the Dominican Republic to receive treatment. On May 1st, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will sew a patch over the hole, so that blood can no longer leak through it. Another organization, Gift of Life International, is contributing funds to pay for surgery. Mirleiny's family needs help funding the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, checkups, and follow-up appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Mirleiny's family overseas. Mirleiny's mother says: "Our family is so happy to know that after this surgery our daughter's heart will be normal!"

Thea is a 55-year-old father of four from Cambodia, who lives with his wife and two of his children. His two older children moved out of home to nearby towns to seek job opportunities. Both Thea and his wife work as rice farmers, and their older children occasionally send money home to help support the family. Thea likes spending time with his family, and watching Cambodian and Thai boxing. In January this year, Thea was in a motorcycle accident near his home and fractured his left shinbone. He was treated in a provincial hospital but the fracture did not heal properly and currently there is still some bone exposed. Thea is presently in chronic pain and discomfort, unable to walk or work. When Thea learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for three hours to seek treatment. On April 29th, surgeons at CSC will perform a debridement, skin flap, and stabilization procedure to to remove dead tissue, cover the wound, and help him walk and feel comfortable again. Thea is able to contribute $100 towards the cost of his treatment and needs help raising $573 more to fund the procedure. Thea says: "I hope my leg can be fixed, so I can go back to work and support my family."

58-year-old Natchokani is a widow from a village in Dedza District in Malawi. With seven children, six of whom have passed away, she now lives with her youngest child, who is 7 years old and attending primary school. Natchokani never had the opportunity to attend school, making it challenging for her to find employment. Consequently, she relies on farming to sustain herself and her son, growing maize, beans, and groundnuts for both sustenance and income. Twenty years ago, Natchokani noticed an itch and an uncomfortable feeling in her throat whenever she was eating. Shortly after, people in her vicinity informed her of a swelling on her neck, which she eventually noticed herself. The swelling has been increasing in size over the years but she never went to seek medical help in health centers as she did not have finances to pay for treatment. Instead, she tried traditional medicine to no avail. Natchokani has continued to experience severe headaches and pain in her upper back. She struggles to swallow and sometimes has shortness of breath when she is lying down. She is unable to carry a heavy load on her head, therefore making it difficult for her to carry out household chores such as fetching water, and firewood and going to the maize mill. One day while she was visiting a patient at our medical partner's care center Nkhoma Hospital, she was seen by a surgeon who later diagnosed her with a multinodular mass, and thyroidectomy was recommended. Our medical partner African Mission Healthcare is requesting $491 to fund Natchokani's thyroid surgery scheduled for March 7th. Following the surgery, her symptoms will be alleviated, allowing her to breathe more easily and engage in her daily tasks without discomfort. Natchokani says, “I hope to receive treatment and resume life without this condition so that I can take care of my only son.”
