U Myint is 49 years old, and has lived in a Township in Burma for his whole life. He lives with his wife, three children, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter. He owns one acre of land and plants rice every year. The harvest each year is enough for the family, but there is no surplus to sell.
U Myint was in a motorcycle accident in April 2016. He was unconscious for two days. When he woke up he was already at the hospital, and was told he would not need surgery.
About two weeks after he was discharged from the hospital, U Myint noticed something was protruding from the lower part of his eyelid. After many hospital visits he was finally diagnosed with a carotico-cavernous fistula which requires surgical intervention.
Surgery in Burma was not an option because the family could not afford it. They had no savings and the medical bills were already expensive. The doctors explained to the family that even if they could afford it, the hospital did not have the capacity to perform the surgery. The doctors told U Myint he must wait for a future international surgical mission but they were not able to tell him when this would be. As time passed the swelling in his lower eye lid was getting bigger and bigger to the point that it blocked his vision in his right eye.
Fortunately, U Myint is now able to receive the surgery he needs. “I totally believe I will get the appropriate treatment and have a normal eye again,” U Myint shared. Let’s help make it possible!
