Sopheara underwent fracture repair surgery so he can return to school.

Sopheara’s parents took the advice of the doctors at their provincial hospital and traveled two and a half hours to have their son’s femur and tibia repaired at our medical partner CSC. After a short stay in the hospital, he will return home to his province. The physiotherapist team has given him exercises to improve his gait and strengthen his leg. Sopheara hopes to return to school and finish out the school term. He will be able to walk again and return to his teenage life.

Sopheara’s mother said: “We are relieved the doctors have fixed his leg and Sopheara will walk well again and be active. Thank you to everyone who helped his leg get better so he will not have to visit hospitals again and can go to school to be successful.”

Sopheara is a 16-year-old student. He is in the ninth grade and has a younger sister in the eighth grade. Sopheara’s father is a construction worker, and his mother works in a garment factory.

Sopheara was in a car accident that fractured his left femur and tibia. After the accident, his family took him to a local hospital; upon review, the doctors referred him to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), for specialized treatment. Currently, Sopheara is experiencing severe pain and difficulty walking.

Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), can help Sopheara heal. On February 15th, he will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will allow him to walk easily again upon recovery. CSC is requesting $465 to help fund this procedure, which is also subsidized by Sopheara’s co-pay that his family was able to gather.

Sopheara shared, “I hope I can heal and walk easily again so I can return to school.”

  • Symptoms
  • Impact on patient's life
  • Cultural or regional significance

What kinds of symptoms do patients experience before receiving treatment?

Patients in need of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) surgeries experience painful fractures or recurrent dislocations. Usually, these injuries result from traffic accidents or other trauma injuries.

What is the impact on patients’ lives of living with these conditions?

Living with an abnormal or deformed bone limits function and can interfere with daily activities. It is also extremely painful.

What cultural or regional factors affect the treatment of these conditions?

Due to lack of helmet usage and weak enforcement of traffic laws, there is a high rate of traffic accidents in Cambodia. This causes many of the fractures and bone dislocations our medical partner sees.

  • Process
  • Impact on patient's life
  • Risks and side-effects
  • Accessibility
  • Alternatives

What does the treatment process look like?

The deformed or abnormal bone is broken and correctly aligned, and any fragments are fixed. Following the realignment of the bone, metal plates, pins, rods, wires, or screws are attached to the bone for stabilization as the internal fixation.

What is the impact of this treatment on the patient’s life?

Patients will experience restored function and mobility and reduced pain. Patients regain independence and return to work, school, and family life.

What potential side effects or risks come with this treatment?

Complications from this surgery are rare but include infection, nerve damage, blood clots, and tissue irritation from the hardware.

How accessible is treatment in the area? What is the typical journey like for a patient to receive care?

Rural Cambodians often self-medicate or seek treatment from traditional healers because they cannot afford hospital treatment. Many patients are referred to CSC by word of mouth.

What are the alternatives to this treatment?

There is no alternative care for this treatment.
