Chakrya is a 13-year-old girl and the oldest of two children from Cambodia. Her parents work in a clothing factory. Chakrya is in grade seven, and her favorite subject is geology. She enjoys eating rice with seafood soup and she loves playing featherball with her friends after school.
Chakrya was born with a congenital nevus on her left forehead and the bridge of her nose. A congenital pigmented or melanocytic nevus is a dark-colored, often hairy, patch of skin. It is present at birth or appears in the first year of life. The nevus has been gradually expanding as she grows. She was first seen at our medical partner’s care center, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) in 2013 and now requires further surgery to address the nevus on her nose and eyebrow. Her mother shared that at school, she feels shy about her appearance and is worried about what others think of her.
Chakrya traveled for two and a half hours to CSC for treatment. On November 29th, she will undergo a nevus removal and a full-thickness skin graft. The removal of the nevus requires a replacement of the affected skin. While it is almost impossible to remove every cell of a large nevus, the goal is to remove as many cells as possible while at the same time preserving function and minimizing scarring. This procedure will help improve her appearance and comfort. Her family can contribute $50 toward the surgery and needs your support for the remaining $676, which will cover the costs of surgical care, hospital recovery, and medications.
Chakrya mother shared: “I hope the surgery will improve her appearance, help her feel more comfortable, and enable her to focus better on her studies.”
