Huch is a 44-year-old man from Cambodia. He lives in Phnom Penh with his elderly parents in a rented house. He has been divorced for 10 years, and has a 16-year-old son who comes and goes from the house as he looks for odd jobs to support the family. At home, Huch likes to watch boxing or soccer on TV, and cooks and cleans for his parents.
Three years ago, Huch started having headaches, muffled hearing, and ear pain. Last year, he developed a cough with chest pain and fever. Family members lent him money to visit a government hospital, where he was treated for tuberculosis for six months. But Huch’s hearing loss and fevers continued. Huch had an ear infection that created a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the eardrum. For this reason, Huch experiences deafness, tinnitus, and ear discharge. It is difficult for him to communicate with his family, and he is not able to work due to the frequent infections.
Fortunately, our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, can help. On June 17th, Huch will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in his left ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Huch’s family can contribute $100 but needs help to raise $377 to fund his procedure and care.
Huch’s parents said, “We hope that Huch will get well soon and his hearing will improve after surgery.”
